Asphalt/Truck Driver Team Member

Esch Landscaping, LLC is a residential and commercial landscape design/build firm located near the beautiful shores of Lake Huron on Saginaw Bay.  Many of our clients have second homes along the coast of Lake Huron. 

We primarily service the thumb area of Michigan. We consist of 12 team members and have 20 team members in peak season. We have been in business for twenty-one years and have established a reputation in our marketplace as the provider for high-end landscapes.

Position Overview

The Asphalt/Truck Driver Team Member is a seasonal (April - November) position.  Asphalt is a material commonly used to surface roadways, driveways and parking lots. Crew members must operate machines to spread asphalt and then smooth it. Although some jobs require spreading and smoothing by hand, motorized equipment is often used. The asphalt team member has a general understanding of asphalt construction and will work on team reporting to the Asphalt Team Leader.

Work Conditions

  • Job requires ability to work with hand tools, small engine equipment, and materials
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. repeatedly through an entire work shift
  • Requires good manual dexterity
  • Work near heavy equipment and other vehicles on a regular basis


  1. Installs asphalt, base materials, site prep.
  2. May assist with supplier/subcontractor scheduling.
  3. Operates, proficiently, a variety of mechanical equipment, asphalt paver, rollers, grader, excavator, skid steers, back hoes, plate compactors, stone grinders, drills, gas and electric chop saws, demolition hammers, and jack hammers.
  4. Operates automatic and stick shift vehicles, such as dump trucks and truck and trailer combinations.
  5. May routinely interact with clients by: 
    1. introduction at the beginning of a job
    2. answering questions
    3. informing client as job progresses what they can expect
    4. responding to client’s requests
    5. making reasonable changes to the plan
    6. providing a walk-through at the job’s completion
  6. Completes the necessary paperwork including daily logs, work orders, change orders, material requisitions, and subcontractor sheets.
  7. Supports Team Leader in planning and organizing the job, ensuring that sufficient resources and materials are available and that job is completed in the most time-efficient manner.
  8. Works closely with team members in maintaining a clean and safe work environment, including work site and equipment by:
    1. Ensure all equipment is tied down and secure, safety gear is worn, safety cones are placed out beside truck and trailer, all laws and regulations concerning the equipment are followed, stop equipment before adjusting, abide by all Michigan laws and Department of Transportation regulations while driving. 
    2. Ensure that all equipment and hand tools assigned are accounted for and taken care of.
    3. Ensure that all trash and debris is removed from the cab of assigned truck at the end of each work day. 
    4. Maintain assigned equipment and notifies mechanic of needed repairs
  9. Helps with snow removal during the winter months.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • CDL/Class A license is mandatory
  • Minimum 3 years experience equipment operation is preferred
  • Competent in the use of power tools
  • Capable of operating required equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Time management skills
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of specific materials, methods, tools and equipment required to complete various asphalt practices
  • Physically fit
  • Ability to follow safe working procedures
  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision, and as part of a team
  • Carry and use a smart phone or data-enabled device for communication and reporting

Wage Range:  $12.00 - $16.00 per hour based on education and experience.
