Hardscape Team Member

Position Overview

The Hardscape Crew Member is a seasonal (April - November) position.  Hardscape refers to hard landscape materials in the built environment structures that are incorporated into a landscape. This position is responsible for a variety of job tasks in the completion of landscape projects, including but not limited to paved areas, driveways, retaining walls, or any other landscaping made up of hard wearing materials such as stone, concrete etc.

Work Conditions

  • Job requires ability to work with hand tools, small engine equipment, and materials
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. repeatedly through an entire work shift
  • Requires good manual dexterity
  • Excellent stamina is required
  • Work near heavy equipment and other vehicles on a regular basis

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years documented experience is preferred
  • Proven record of success
  • Knowledgeable in landscapes, hardscapes, drainage, irrigation and lighting

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs planting and related activities.
  • Performs routine lawn maintenance including grass cutting, lawn edging, weed pulling, and other routine lawn-maintenance activities. 
  • Uses lawn mower and related equipment.
  • Provides seasonal lawn care, such as spring and fall leaf clean-up. 
  • Moves materials and equipment and performs related duties to assist in landscaping and hardscaping.
  • Digs holes and trenches and excavates for hardscaping features using picks and shovels or related equipment.
  • Hauls or spreads topsoil, gravel, sand, mulch, or related materials using wheelbarrows and rakes.
  • Hand-finishes grade and apply seed, straw, or sod.
  • Performs routine construction tasks, such as building forms for concrete using hand tools.
  • Maintains assigned equipment and notifies the team leader of needed repairs.
  • Responds politely to client inquires and projects a professional image.
  • Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the team leader.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment, including the work site and equipment by:
    • Ensuring all equipment is tied down and secure, safety gear is worn, safety cones are placed out beside truck and trailer, all laws and regulations concerning the equipment are followed, stop equipment before adjusting, abide by all Michigan laws and Department of Transportation regulations while driving. 
    • Ensure that all equipment and hand tools assigned are accounted for and taken care of.
    • Ensure that all trash and debris is removed from the cab of assigned truck at the end of each work day. 
    • Maintains assigned equipment and notifies mechanic of needed repairs.
    • Loads equipment and materials on and off trucks and trailers.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years experience in horticulture/landscaping
  • Plant knowledge and identification, and experience in plant care
  • Competent in the use of power tools (chainsaws, pruners, sod cutters, sprayers, rototillers, lawn mowers, line trimmers, etc.)
  • Capable of operating required equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Time management skills
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of specific materials, methods, tools and equipment required to complete various softscape practices
  • Physically fit with strong stamina
  • Ability to follow safe working procedures
  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision, and as part of a team
  • Carry and use a smart phone or data-enabled device for communication and reporting

Wage Range:  $12.00 - $16.00 per hour based on education and experience.
