Roadside Cottage Cove

Roadside Cottage Cove - Esch Landscaping - MLA Award Winner 2016

Project Description

The roadside entry was very tired and ready for a major transformation. The client gave us full creative freedom with a few requests. They requested that we create a bold entrance to the front door, and provide outdoor entertaining areas that are wheelchair accessible as the client is expecting future health challenges that will require wheelchair use. They wanted the project to be in harmony with the adjacent landscape by using natural materials so we used boulders and natural looking steps to achieve this.

For perspective, we provided 3D rendering images to the client prior to moving forward with the project.

We delivered on these requests by creating a formal stair entry framed by pillars, provided a large fire pit with sitting rocks and surrounding patio area around, and an upper patio dining area with kitchen. Wheelchair accessibility was achieved by installing a hardscape ramp with handrail flanked with natural boulders to soften its appearance so as to not dominate the landscape.

Material selection was important for this job to not be overpowering so a slate gray/slate textured paving stone was chosen that complimented the house color, and natural boulders were used to provide a rustic feel. A water feature was installed in the drive court to provide white noise as the lakeside of the house is not very usable due to high winds. This was one of the most meaningful and inspiring projects Esch has completed and was a strong reminder of why we are in this industry and why we value our clients like we do.
